You Are Both the Sky and the Horizon

A breathtaking paradox

Monday, April 28, 2025

Sit with me for a moment. Close your eyes, if you’re able to.

Take a deep breath in, and as you breathe out, feel the physicality of your body. The air as it moves in and out of your lungs, the rhythm of your heart, the sensation of gravity grounding you on your chair or wherever you may be.

These sensations are reminders that right you are here. Grounded. Fully present. Beautifully, powerfully human.

But...is that all you are?

No. Of course not.

You are so much more…

At the heart of your existence lies a breathtaking paradox. You are both a soul and a body, both infinite and fleeting, both boundless and grounded. One cannot exist in this life without the other. This is the dance you’re here to experience, the sacred union of form and essence, ego and soul.

Your body is the vessel through which your soul experiences life. Through which it moves, tastes, touches, loves, and connects. It gives shape and boundary to your experience. It is the horizon, offering perspective and contrast in this physical world.

But you? You are also the sky. Vast. Infinite. The eternal soul that animates this body, that whispers “You’re not alone”, even in your darkest moments.

Together, this body and this soul create the fullness of who you are.

It’s easy to fall into the belief that the ego is something to suppress or eliminate. After all, many spiritual traditions portray it as an obstacle to enlightenment. But what if the ego isn’t your enemy? What if it’s a teacher, a guide, a necessary counterpart to the soul?

The ego is the "I" that allows you to experience individuality. It shapes your stories, preferences, and identity. It anchors you in this world, helping you survive, thrive, and grow. Without it, we might experience oneness, but we would lose the richness and depth of the human experience—the vivid colours and textures that make life uniquely our own.

Yes, the ego is often rooted in fear and the pursuit of control, clinging to labels, achievements, and possessions. It defines itself through the external world. But those very tendencies reflect something sacred too. They mirror your desire to make sense of this existence, to carve out a space for yourself within the vastness.

The ego is not a flaw; it is part of the masterpiece.

And the soul? It is the essence of who you are. It is timeless, connected, and infinite. While the body interacts with the physical world, your soul connects you to the divine, the eternal. It reminds you that you are not just a part of this universe; you are the universe, woven into BE-ing.

Where the ego seeks validation, the soul knows. While the ego operates out of fear, the soul reminds of love. It urges you to see beyond the surface, to feel deeply, to live with purpose.

Mystics and sages have always pointed us back to this truth. The Hindus speak of the soul as “Ātman,” the unchanging self that transcends the physical. Sufi poets describe it as “the breath of God,” a divine spark within every being. Across all traditions, the message is clear: The soul is eternal, and it moves through you, as you.

To live fully is to honour both your ego and your soul. Imagine them as dance partners, each bringing something irreplaceable to the performance. The soul dreams, infuses the moment with depth and meaning. But the ego acts, giving those dreams shape and expression in the physical world.

Without the ego, there would be no individuality, no unique story, no "you." And without the soul, there would be no connection, no purpose, no profound sense of belonging to something greater. No love.

Together, they create the human experience. Together, they are you.

This sacred interplay between soul and ego is not new. Cultures and spiritual traditions across the ages have sought to articulate it.

The Hermetic philosophy speaks of the Principle of Polarity, which teaches us that opposites are simply two ends of the same spectrum. Light and dark, love and fear, ego and soul all exist as aspects of a unified whole.

The yin and yang of Taoism illustrate this beautifully as well. Within the darkness of yin lies a seed of light, and within the brightness of yang lies a seed of shadow. They are not separate; they flow into one another, creating balance.

Even the Hindu concepts of "prakriti" (nature, form) and "purusha" (consciousness, essence) reflect the same truth. Both are sacred, and together they reveal the dance of creation.

What these teachings remind us is this: To be human is to embody duality, to carry both light and shadow, to be both physical and eternal.

Take another deep breath. Feel the air as it fills your lungs, the heartbeat within your chest, the gravity holding you here. Feel the ground beneath you, the body that carries you through life.

And then feel beyond it.

Feel the presence within you that cannot be named, the eternal essence that breathes life into you and through you, and in this moment know that you are both.

You are the fragile, beautiful, imperfect human and the radiant, limitless soul. You are form and formlessness, the sky and the horizon, the instrument and the melody.

When you begin to nurture this truth, to honour both the ego and the soul, you begin to live as your fullest, truest self. Not just a human having a spiritual experience, but a spiritual being revelling in the gift of being human.

And what a privilege, what an honour, it is to experience it all.
